Football team to visit Jewish Community Center

Over 15 players from the football team are scheduled to visit with the children at the Jewish Community Center at 2640 North Forest Road in Getzville Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. According to a press release from UB Athletics, the members of the team will emphasize how important an education is and play catch with the children.

Athletes of the Week

Andrea Lehner of the women's swimming team won female athlete of the week. At the Zippy Invitational, Lehner won three individual events and was a part of two winning relay squads. She helped the team finish second at the invitational. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Lehner broke the school-record, hitting the wall with a time of 56.27 seconds. She also set a meet record in the 200-yard individual medley by winning that race in 2:04.37. Lehner won the Mid-American Conference swimmer of the week for the third time this season.

Sophomore guard Sean Smiley of the men's basketball team was selected as the male athlete of the week. Smiley led the team in scoring in two of the three games that they won last week. In the game against Tulane, he scored a career-high 26 points on 8-10 shooting, including 5-5 from the three-point line. Against Evansville, Smiley finished with 14 points, hitting four three's and grabbing down a career-high seven rebounds.

McDowell earns MAC Swimmer of the Week

Sophomore diver Michael McDowell was honored by the MAC for winning the Swimmer of the Week award. This is the second time this season that McDowell has won the award. McDowell swept both the one-meter and three-meter diving events at last weekend's Zippy Invitational. In the three-meter competition, he broke his own record by scoring 335.65 points in six dives. In the one-meter dive, he set meet marks again by scoring 303.05 points. He was the only diver to surpass 300 points. He won the event by 27.25 points.

Baseball team brings in five for 2008-09 season

Baseball head coach Ron Torgalski has announced that five players have signed national letters of intent to play baseball for the Bulls next season. Dale Anderson, Kevin Crumb, Brian Lattanzi, River McWilliams and Jason Steen will join the team for the 2008-09 season. Anderson is a shortstop that has been a member of the Canadian Junior National Team. Crumb is a right-handed pitcher who was named to the All-Catholic team in the Detroit Catholic High School League. Lattanzi is a catcher that participated in the Ringor Baseball Showcase Series, an event for the top 44 players in the country. McWilliams is a right-handed pitcher and can also play in the infield. Steen is a left-handed pitcher who competed in the 2007 USA Baseball Tournament of Stars.
