Gill plans to stay

After interviewing to be the head coach of Nebraska's football team, Buffalo Bulls' coach Turner Gill announced to the media Tuesday afternoon that he will be staying in Buffalo.

"I'm planning on staying here," Gill said. "There are only a handful of schools that I'd be interested in going to, but I plan on staying here. I'm not a coach that likes to jump around. You never say never, but I have every plan to stay here with my wife and kids."

While Gill was interviewed at Nebraska, his alma mater, the Cornhuskers announced that they would be under the leadership of LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini next season.

"Most people think that Nebraska and I would be a great fit," Gill said. "But it just wasn't meant to be at this particular time."

Gill felt that the attention that Buffalo got from the media was good exposure for the program.

The announcement comes at the end of the football team's most successful season since joining Division I-A. In Gill's second year as a coach, he was named the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year as the Bulls went 5-7 overall and 5-3 in the MAC.

"We were all hoping he would stay because he's a good coach," said junior offensive linemen Jeff Niedermier.

While he has been contacted by at least one other interested school, Gill says he is not actively talking to any others.

Gill also stated that he and Athletics Director Warde Manuel have had discussions about a two-year contract extension. The 2008 season will be the third year of a five-year deal.

"We had a little taste of the pie this year, but I know great things are going to come next year," said senior defensive lineman Trevor Scott. "We're trying to build a tradition."
