In recognition of World AIDS Day on Dec. 1, Student Health and Wellness is offering free HIV testing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30 in the Student Union.
According to the AVERT, an organization attempting to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS, the number of people living with HIV has risen from about eight million in 1990 to nearly 40 million today. About 1.4 million of the 40 million that are infected live in North America. About half of the 1.4 million infected Americans are younger than 25.
There are two types of HIV tests. The first is the HIV antibody test that detects whether the person's body is fighting infection. The second type is the antigen test. Antigens are substances found on a foreign body or germ that trigger the production of antibodies in the body. Those infected with HIV develop detectable antibodies within six to twelve weeks of infection. In rare cases it can take up to six months.
Students can be tested on campus at Michael Hall. There are two options: the rapid HIV test and the comprehensive STD screening that includes HIV testing.
