Women's soccer finishes season, players earn honors

The women's soccer team scored a 3-0 victory over Mid-American Conference (MAC) rival Kent State on Thursday night at UB Stadium.

Senior Ashley Turner put the Bulls on the scoreboard in the 32nd minute with her third goal of the season. Junior Andrea Vescio added two more goals in the first half to give Buffalo a commanding lead. Vescio finished the season with a team-high six goals.

Amy Coron held on for her fifth shut out of the season. The junior goalkeeper made seven saves and moved up to sixth place on the school's all-time single season save list, with 128 on the year.

The Bulls will not advance to the MAC post-season after finishing with a 4-6-1 record in the conference. Buffalo ends their season with an overall record of 7-10-2.

The game also marked the end of an era, as head coach Jean-A Tassy will retire after coaching Buffalo for the past 13 seasons.

On Thursday, Vescio and senior Heidi Griffiths were named to the 2007 College Sports Information Director's of America Academic All-District I University Division Women's Soccer Second team. It is the second time Griffiths has earned the honor and the first time for Vescio.

Women's basketball falls in exhibition opener

In their first game of the 2007-08 season, the women's basketball team fell to Holy Family (Philadelphia, PA), 50-47 in an exhibition match Thursday night at Alumni Arena.

Senior Barbora Homolova led the Bulls with 14 points and 7 blocks. Junior Jamie Schiebner recorded a double-double for the Bulls with ten points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Schiebner was also a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. Senior Heather Turner added seven points, four assists and a block in the losing effort.

The Bulls open their regular season on Sunday, Nov. 11 against Youngstown State at 2 p.m.


Woods named finalist for top punter award

Bulls senior punter Ben Woods has been named one of ten finalists for the 2007 Ray Guy Award. The award honors the nation's top collegiate punter. This season, Woods is averaging a career-best 42.3 yards per punt and has placed 18 punts inside the 20-yard line this season. Only 13 of his 46 punts have been returned.

Three finalists will be named in late-November with the winner announced prior to the Home Depot/ESPN National College Football Awards show Thursday, Dec. 6.
