UB alumni Dimitrios Jones of Highgate Ave. in Buffalo was arrested and charged with sexual abuse and forcible touching after an incident that occurred in a current UB student's North Campus apartment.
The misdemeanor charge could result in up to one year in jail for Jones, who graduated from UB last semester with degrees in sociology and African American studies.
The female victim's name is not being released, according to UB Police Chief Gerald Schoenle, but she has been identified as a UB student in her early 20s.
The parties met on Facebook, which led to the victim inviting Jones to her apartment, according to Schoenle.
"It's always a problem when someone goes on the Internet, whether it's Facebook or something else...there's a lot of anonymity on the Internet," Schoenle said. "It's definitely high-risk behavior that I wouldn't recommend to anybody."
According to Schoenle, students can avert Internet-initiated situations like this by choosing not to use sites like Facebook, and alternatively by organizing a group meeting in a public place.
"My first recommendation is to avoid meeting people that way," he said.
