"Girls rule, boys drool"

"What goes up, must come down. Spinning wheel got to round."

These classic lyrics from Blood, Sweat and Tears couldn't have been truer for the men's and women's soccer teams this weekend. While the men's team won in overtime on Friday, the women's team fell in double overtime. The following Sunday, the women's squad shut out their opponent, while the men's squad was crushed by the Titans.

Led by senior goalkeeper Amy Coron, the women's squad recorded its first shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory, while the men's squad fell 1-0 to the Detroit Mercy Titans.

The Bulls (3-4-1) started off quickly as senior forward Heidi Griffiths scored unassisted in the 14th minute to put the Bulls up by one. Griffiths leads the Bulls with four goals on the season.

Sophomore midfielder Caitlin Higgins soon extended the Bulls' lead to 2-0, putting one past Howard's goalkeeper Jessamyn Perkins in the 33rd minute. Junior forward Brooke McCalla assisted on the goal, marking her third helper of the season.

The second half went off without a hitch as the Bulls came away with the 2-0 victory after a scoreless second half.

"We had many chances to score," said senior forward Ashley Turner, who had three shots. "My team set me up well. It just shows how well we play as a team."

Buffalo had 16 shots, nine of them on goal while the Lady Bisons (0-8) recorded eight shots, with three scoring chances, but couldn't slip one past Coron. Buffalo also took the advantage 7-4 on corner kicks.

Coach Jean-A Tassy and the Bulls will begin their Mid-American Conference play this weekend.

"We created a lot of opportunities. It was real positive especially going into MAC games this Friday," Tassy said.

While the women's team was busy shutting out Howard, the men's team was busy being shut out by Detroit Mercy by a score of 1-0.

In the 64th Minute, Renato Susnja headed the ball into open space for Mark Djurovski who immediately shot one past senior goalkeeper Daniel Bell. Detroit (3-3-2) kept the one goal lead for the rest the match.

"We played well, we just gave up a goal we shouldn't have," said head coach John Astudillo. "It was a good shot."

Bell made six saves on the afternoon, giving him an even 200 saves for his career. Bell ranks seventh all time in saves among goalkeepers at Buffalo.

Sophomore Dan Bulley and freshman Jordan Brouk recorded three shots each. The Bulls (5-3-1) had a total of 14 shots while the Titans had 16. The Bulls held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. Bryan Kloss made three saves for the Titans to record the shutout.

"All we can do is get ready for the MAC this weekend," said senior defender David Chojnowski. "We are practicing every night and working hard getting ready for the MAC."

The men's team will open conference play at UB Stadium on Friday at 7 p.m. against Bowling Green. The women's team will stay on the road for the next three games, heading to Akron to face the Zips this Friday at 7:30 p.m. They will wrap up the weekend against Ohio, Sunday at 1 p.m.
