Trading in a suit and tie for a loose-fitting T-shirt and backwards cap, Student Association Treasurer John Martin gives off an air of approachableness, which he says is one key change from last year's SA.
"Our e-board is more accessible, that's different from last year," Martin said.
When asked about how this year's SA will be different from last year's, Martin stayed tight-lipped and humble, mentioning a few changes he's made around the office. One example is in the structure of this year's staff. Rather than having the traditional two bookkeepers and two assistant treasurers, he has three bookkeepers to help the paperwork move along smoothly, and one assistant treasurer.
"We're not doing anything crazy," Martin said.
He previously held the position of assistant bookkeeper of SA during the 2006-2007 academic year. By getting involved in SA, Martin believes his people skills have improved significantly, and hopes to provide more opportunities to get involved and have the same experiences.
"My biggest pet peeve is people who don't work hard or to their best ability," Martin said. "That's changed in me since high school - I used to drift along, only doing the bare minimum."
One major event already in the works is the Senior Boat Cruise and Miss Buffalo for the Month of September, according to Martin. This year, SA has finalized numerous events for October and November with time to spare, including a surprise concert coming in October.
"Most students don't get involved until their sophomore or junior year," said Martin. "We wanted to reach out to freshmen."
Martin spoke to the freshman class during opening weekend about the benefits of getting involved and making UB a more personal environment.
"Fresh ideas are what keep SA fluid and changing with what students think," Martin said.
