Linguistic error characteristic of journalists

To the Editor:

The article entitled "Simulators give medical students hands on experience" in the April 11, 2007 Spectrum erroneously leads the reader to assume that the simulation report relates to the School of Medicine rather than the School of Nursing. This linguistic error, which is unfortunately common in journalism, assumes that nursing is a type of subordinate field under medicine. Obviously, we are a separate discipline with our own school and would like the appropriate recognition for our educational innovations.

My colleagues in nursing would be happy to assist in providing appropriate information about news emanating from our scholarship and teaching. We appreciate opportunities to work with our university press to create accurate and newsworthy articles.
