Some groups have the innate ability to create an infinite amount of superb albums, while other bands struggle to assemble just one, but, as they say, life isn't fair.
The indie group Daphne Loves Derby recently released their latest album, "Goodnight Witness Light." Compared to their other albums "Strength of All Convinced," "Daphne Loves Derby," and "Closing Down the Pattern Department," this one rivals the others in quality of entertainment.
"Light" exceeds past albums in that it breaks new ground, thanks to a new sound and creative lyrics. These Washington natives are often compartmentalized with other emo or indie groups, when in reality they're not given proper credit for the exclusiveness of their sound. One of the more defining factors of this album is its poetry; the lyrics are indubitably thought provoking.
Songs like "How's It Going to End?" have this essential quality.
"Don't close your eyes / you might miss a shooting star / Oh don't you know / if you fall asleep / You'll lose everything / that means anything to you / So don't you dare forget / We gave our lives / to learn how to fly on our own / But wings only work when we are completely alone," Kenny Choi sings.
The quality of their lyrics seems effortless even though songwriting is an aspect that many bands tend to struggle with. Being nostalgic and rhythmic are hard to accomplish simultaneously. Despite this difficulty, Daphne Loves Derby manages to pull off both unpredictable vocals and harmonic lines.
Their music covers a broad scale of emotion and sound, leaving the listener with plenty of options to appetize their mood on any given day.
Songs like "Cue the Sun!" depict confusion while other songs represent hysterical revelation.
"If I find my way through the darkest of days / Will I laugh about the things that kept me awake? / But if my greatest fear paints itself so crystal clear / Will I run away or will I hide?" Choi sings.
With their fourth studio album, Daphne Loves Derby has yet to disappoint. Hopefully their litany of achievement will continue to unfurl rather than plateauing in the near future.
