Just over a week after the second water pipe burst in Goodyear Hall on South Campus, dorm-flooding moved to North Campus with an alleged broken water pipe that caused several students to be displaced from their rooms in Dewey Hall at Governors Complex early Sunday Morning.
Unconfirmed reports from Dewey residents say that the flood started in the men's bathroom of the 306 suites when a student kicked a toilet bowl, disconnecting it from the wall.
Students were woken up by a fire alarm at about 3 a.m. and very quickly realized that this was no ordinary fire drill.
"All of a sudden there was water dripping from the first floor and rushing through staircases," said Hayley Cordero, a freshman business administration major who lives in Dewey Hall
John Robinson, a sophomore mechanical engineering major and a resident advisor in Dewey Hall also witnessed the flooding firsthand.
"I thought it was just another fire drill," he said. "But then the RAs on duty knocked on my door and I saw water coming down the hall."
Students were instructed to put towels in front of their doors to help ease water flow into their dorm rooms, but they did little to prevent water from coming in.
"My friend woke me up and told me to start picking my stuff up because there was flooding," said David Hubbard, a sophomore sociology major who lives in the 306 suite.
Clean up began at about 11 a.m., once students were allowed back into their rooms. Several residents laid their carpets out in the lounge areas to dry. Many other students were not so lucky and had to throw away possessions that were irreparably affected by the flood.
"A lot my stuff was damaged," Hubbard said. "My stereo is damaged, my Playstation is damaged, my TV barely works and now I'm trying to get my computer to work."
Jason Brown, a freshman psychology major and another resident of the 306 suite, also lost equipment for his X-box, his cell phone and lot of clothes due to the flood. "A lot of my textbooks and notes were damaged," he said.
Damage was also extended to the first floor when part of the ceiling collapsed.
Joseph Krakowiak, Director of University Residence Halls and Apartments and Justin Alger, Governors Complex Coordinator were unavailable for comment on Sunday.
