Runners of all abilities have the opportunity to challenge themselves for a good cause this semester. Runners and slow pokes alike can join the 16-week marathon-training program this spring, free of charge.
People who love to run will train for the ultimate goal of completing the Nissan Buffalo Marathon on May 27. Races include a marathon, half marathon and marathon relay.
The program, run by Jessica Nyrop, is an opportunity for students to work within an individualized program, modified to every runner's individual ability. Nyrop, a three- time Nissan Buffalo Marathon runner and member of the Nissan Buffalo Marathon Committee, encourages all to join the program and believes it is a great way to "challenge oneself."
There will be also be mini-clinics about training, running shoes, common injuries, nutrition and running gear.
Nyrop's program works as a pyramid, where runners of novice, intermediate and advanced levels can train. Students can start with no experience and work their way to the top, whether their goal is to fulfill a New Year's resolution, a love of running or an interest in benefiting a good cause.
The program is also a great opportunity to train with runners who share the same interests and goals and make new friends - all while getting into shape for free. According to Nyrop, it is also a great way to relieve stress.
There will be an informational meeting on Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. in Alumni Arena room 121 (the bull pen). Training begins Feb. 5.
Registration fees for the marathon are $50 for marathon, $35 for half marathon and $100 for the relay team. All proceeds are donated to charity, and prizes up to $2,000.
"It is a wonderful feeling when you cross that finish line. It's a feeling of accomplishment and completion," Nyrop said. "My goal is to have people feeling proud of their accomplishment."
