"Homecoming weekend hosts SNL writer, dodgeball tourney"

Homecoming weekend begins this Friday, hosting among other events a speech by UB alumnus and Emmy award-winning "Saturday Night Live" writer0 Alan Zweibel.

Events will start Friday morning with walking tours of the campus. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. that evening, the "Dodge Bull" Tournament will take place at the homecoming field on North Campus, organized by the Student Alumni Association Board (USAB), the creators and hosts of Oozfest.

"We are interested in starting some new traditions at UB, for both students and eventually Alumni," said Laura Cornwall, assistant director for programs and management grad student.

The tournament consists of teams of four, which enter to play in the competitive dodgeball event for a registration fee of $20. The winning team will be awarded a prize valued at $150.

According to Cornwall, there is a maximum number of 75 teams allowed to compete this year, and they expect at least one third to participate. The tournament is not just about dodgeball, though.

"Teams will be competing for creative costumes as well as winning the Dodge Bull tournament," Cornwall said. "There will be music, food, fun and good competition. Even if you don't sign up this year, come out and support your favorite team."

There will also be a carnival from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday night. A pre-game tent party, hosted by the Student Alumni Association Board from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the UB Stadium, will be offering a free picnic lunch, a chicken wing eating contest and games.

Following the tent party will be the football game against Ball State, which takes place at 1 p.m. at the UB Stadium.

Zweibel's comedy act will be at 8 p.m. on Saturday night at the Center for the Arts and includes special guest juggler Chris Bliss.

"Zweibel was one of the original comedy writers for Saturday Night Live (and) created notable characters such as Gilda Radner's 'Roseanne Rosannadanna' and John Belushi's 'Samurai Warrior'," Cornwall said.
