The independent student publication of The University at Buffalo, since 1950

From the Editor

On Friday, November 17, 1950, 11 University at Buffalo students worked together to establish the official student publication of The University at Buffalo - The Spectrum. In their first year, the journalists defined their paper with the following editorial statement:

"Campus news in its dispersion can only be brought into focus through the medium of a newspaper which must in turn present all the hues and facets as they appear. We of The Spectrum will endeavor to print the many aspects of important issues with responsibly written student interpretation. In presenting these opinions it is hoped student interest will be aroused to such an extent that intelligent analysis will follow"

- The Spectrum, Volume I, Issue 2, December 1, 1950

Although a lot has changed in the last 56 years, The Spectrum is still your newspaper here at UB.

The editorial staff prides itself on providing you with campus news, information and viewpoints as well as coverage and commentary on national and international events. As a UB newspaper versus a Buffalo or national publication, The Spectrum offers content aimed at the unique needs of members of the on-campus community.

Beyond current campus news, The Spectrum also serves as one of the few archives of life at UB in the last 56 years. Whether you want to see who was elected as Mr. Formal in 1954, what UB was like during the Blizzard of 1977, or just a chronology UB history, The Spectrum archives are available to you both in The Spectrum office (Suite 132 Student Union) or Lockwood Library.

Above everything else, it is important to remember that The Spectrum belongs to you, the student body of UB. Since The Spectrum has editorial autonomy from the university we are able to provide objective analysis of the news and events we cover. It is inevitable though, that we print something that you may not agree with.

Therefore, we encourage you to provide us with any feedback or opinions you might have, whether it be in the form of a letter to the editor or in a full-column response called "My Turn." This is your newspaper, and although we may not run every submission we receive, everything sent in is considered and seen by staff editors. Your ideas for possible news or feature stories are also always welcome.

The Spectrum is your way to stay in touch with the UB community, and we look forward to yet another exciting, news filled year.
