Kennedy, Getsy lead Zips in upset of Wolfpack


Akron 20, North Carolina State 17

After failing to score a touchdown on the final play of the game to knock off Penn State in week one, the Akron Zips (1-1) had the same opportunity this week against the North Carolina State Wolfpack (1-1). This time the Zips converted this opportunity on the legs of running back Dennis Kennedy, who had 30 rushes for 121 yards and three touchdowns, including the game winner.

Quarterback Marcus Stone threw for 209 passing yards and two fourth quarter touchdowns in the home loss for N.C. State. Akron was led through the air by senior quarterback Luke Getsy, who threw for 240 yards through the air.


Army 17, Kent State 14 (OT)

The Army Black Knights (1-1) were able to beat Kent State (0-2) on kicker Austin Miller's 36-yard field goal in overtime. Miller's field goal was set up when Army gained possession after the Black Knights recovered Kent State quarterback Julian Edelman's fumble on the second play of overtime.

Army's rushing attack was led by running backs Wesley McMahand and Tony Moore. McMahand had 19 carries for 90 yards, while Moore rushed for 35 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns. Edelman led the Golden Flashes in passing and rushing with 16 rushes for 82 yards and 92 passing yards and one touchdown. This was Kent State's 11th consecutive loss.



Eastern Michigan 20, Michigan State 52

EMU (0-2) struck first blood on kicker Andrew Wellock's 41-yard field goal in the first quarter. However, the Eagles were unable to secure any other lead the rest of the game as it fell to the Spartans (2-0).

Michigan State quarterback Drew Stanton obtained 279 yards of total offense and five touchdowns in the win. Wide receiver Matt Trannon was Stanton's main target with 14 receptions, 145 receiving yards and two scores. Wide receiver Eric Deslauriers caught six passes for 56 yards and a touchdown for EMU.


Toledo 10, Western Michigan 31

In what was the conference opener for both teams, WMU (1-1) scored 24 unanswered points in the second half to beat the Rockets (0-2) at home. It was the Broncos' first victory over Toledo since 2000, which was also the last time it won the MAC West Division.

Running back Mark Bonds rushed for a career-high 134 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries for WMU. Bonds also led the Broncos in receiving with three catches for 32 yards. In the loss, Toledo was led by running back Jalen Parmele who had 111 rushing yards on 17 carries and quarterback Clint Cochran who had 218 yards passing.


Central Michigan 17, Michigan 41

Michigan running back Mike Hart had 19 rushes, 116 yards and three touchdowns for the Wolverines (2-0) as they rolled over the Chippewas (0-2) in Ann Arbor, Michigan in front of 108,712 people.

CMU's quarterback Dan LeFevour had 153 yard passing and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Damien Linson hauled in six passes for 87 yards and a touchdown for the Chippewas. Michigan will now go on to face The Spectrum's No. 1 ranked Notre Dame on Saturday.


Miami (OH) 31, Purdue 38

Four quarters were not enough for the RedHawks (0-2) and Boilermakers (2-0), as they battled into an overtime period when running back Kory Sheets scored one of his four rushing touchdowns for Purdue to win the game. Miami advanced to the Boilermakers' 8-yard line, but were unable to penetrate the Purdue defenses on the last possession of the game.

The Redhawks had a chance to win the game in regulation when kicker Nathan Parseghian attempted a field goal with 17 seconds left in the game. But Purdue defensive end Anthony Spencer was able to block the kick to force the overtime. Miami quarterback Mike Kokal threw for 354 yards and four touchdowns and senior wide receiver Ryne Robinson had 10 catches for 169 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.


Ohio 35, Northern Illinois 23

The Bobcats (2-0) outgunned NIU (0-2) in both teams conference opening game. Ohio had 24 first downs and 509 total yards, while the Huskies gained 461 yards and 22 first downs in the game.

Quarterback Austen Everson passed for 322 yards and three touchdowns and running back Kelvin McRae amassed 204 yards total on 22 touches for three scores in the Ohio victory. Running back Garrett Wolfe had 24 carries, 196 yards and two touchdowns in the home opening loss for NIU.


Indiana 24, Ball State 23

Kicker Austin Starr's fourth quarter 35-yard field goal lifted the Hoosiers over the Ball State Cardinals in a battle of two Indiana schools.

Quarterback Kellen Lewis who had 213 passing yards, 93 rushing yards and two total scores, led the Hoosiers. Quarterback Joey Lynch led Ball State through the air with 238 yards and three touchdowns.
