The Spectrum fall 2006 fashion review

Arts & Life Editor, Asst. Arts & Life Editors

As swimsuit and tank tops are moved to the clearance racks, fall's new styles are trading places.

Returning to school isn't just about new classes and textbooks - it also means new clothes. Only, there's not always much money left over in the average student's budget for an entirely new wardrobe.

Assistant editors on the life and sports desk went out on a mission (insert theme music here) - to find this season's new look. Leggings, tailored jackets, soft sweaters and corduroys have taken center stage.

Old Navy and the Salvation Army were the main hubs of our research, since both are within the average student' price range - as cheap as possible.

As the thermometers drop, layering, as in seasons past, remains an essential look.

To get the most mileage out of your summer wear, recycle pieces such as ribbed tanks, camisoles, and tee shirts, wearing them under sweaters and jackets for a splash of extra color.

For the females, we recommend investing in a multi-functional jacket or blazer. Pick your fabric - corduroy, velour or denim, as well as the style - a military-inspired jacket, blazer, or an updated trench that hits at your waist.

For both men and women, dark denim is replacing the destroyed threads that we loved. They can be dressed up or down, and as a plus, are more slimming.

Much to our chagrin, black leggings are invading fashion magazines and the ordinary woman's closet. If you have the legs for them, wear Capri length, with a tunic shaped shirt.

A long sleeved button up cotton shirt is a must have, perfect for layering, or leaving open a few revealing buttons. Tops have become longer, but only buy them if you have a taller frame, otherwise they will just make you look frumpy.

Larger prints draw attention away from pinstriped pants. The rules go out the window when it comes to mixing and matching stripes and bold patterns.

Classic big buckled belts not only accentuate the waist, they add a little pizzazz to the boring pant. Get one in every color. An oversized handbag completes the outfit, serving not only to carry cosmetics, but your notebooks as well.

Guys, you're style is consistent. Continue to wear those sexy graphic shirts that show us your guns. Layer them over plain white or black cotton tee shirts.

Button up polos, warm sweater jackets, and slip on sneakers or canvas shoes: keep your look simple. The button ups are perfect for class, a date, or an interview for a part-time job.

Hats, hats, hats. Enough said.

For both guys and girls, make sure you have pieces that can do double duty for school, work or a night on the town.

As always, these are just guidelines. We too are blossoming fashionistas. Wear what is comfortable and affordable. When buying staple pieces, make sure they fit your body frame and your unique style.
