Chad Upshaw has spent the past three seasons suiting up for the Bulls as a football player, but as of Wednesday, the junior can add another sport to his r?(c)sum?(c).
Men's basketball head coach Reggie Witherspoon added Upshaw to his active roster before the Kent State game. The 6-foot 4-inch tight end dropped his No. 80 football jersey to suit up in as No. 42 the rest of the season.
According to Athletic Communications Director Jon Fuller, the team was thinking about bringing a football player over to add an additional big man to its roster. Due to injuries to forwards Parnell Smith and Vadim Fedotov, Buffalo has a hole in its frontcourt, and although Upshaw is expected to be primarily used as a practice player, he may see time on the court.
Upshaw is not the first gridiron athlete to hit the Bulls hardwood. Adam Johnson, who played both wide receiver and forward in his senior season at Buffalo in 2002-2003.
