Colgate cleans up

The men's tennis team traveled to rival Colgate on Sunday and were handed a defeat as the Bulls fell to the Red Raiders, 6-1.

Buffalo's lone victory came in singles play where Matt Kennedy defeated Colgate's Marshall Wheeler, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4 spot.

The Bulls were swept in all other singles matches though two matches were taken to the third set. At the No. 2 spot, Mickey Gallagher of Colgate defeated the Bulls' Nikesh Singh Panthlia in three sets 6-2, 6-7, and 7-5.

The Bulls did not fair any better in doubles matches, being defeated in all three. The closet match was at the second slot. The Bulls' Mike Rockman and Albert Alant were defeated by Red Raiders Marshall Wheller and Gallagher. The match went to a super-tiebreaker, but Colgate finished it off, 9-8.

The Bulls open their home schedule on Friday with a day-night doubleheader at the Village Glen Tennis Center. At noon, the Bulls host Mid-American Conference rival Western Michigan. The Bulls then match up with regional rival Cornell in the evening, starting around 8 p.m.

Cage all the rage

Senior guard Calvin Cage has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division I All-District Team. Cage now qualifies as an eligible athlete for the NABC Division I All-American team.

Cage averages a team-best 17.8 points per game, third best in the Mid-American Conference, and he is second in the MAC with 74 three-pointers made.

Cage is the only MAC player to receive first-team honors, while Jay Youngblood of Kent state and Romeo Travis of Akron made the NABC All-District 10 second team.

Record breakers

It was a record-setting week for senior Brooke Meunier of the women's basketball team and junior Dan McKenna of the indoor track and field team. Both were named Athletes of the Week by UB for their accomplishments.

Meunier became the 15th player in team history to score 1,000 points in her career. Meunier accomplished the milestone against Miami (Ohio) when she poured in 17. The Buffalo guard also contributed 10 points on Saturday in a loss at Bowling Green.

Posting a winning time of 8:29.65, McKenna broke the Bulls record in the 3,000-meter race at the Zips Open. Saturday marked the first time the junior distance runner competed in the event this season. McKenna's time broke the former mark set in 2004 by Todd Ludden.
