Abortion not a women's rights issue

Letter to the editor

Your article aptly named "Undoing what we've done" (Feb. 24) has a few holes in its argument. While I'm not a woman, and will never understand the feeling of pregnancy by rape or incest. I am, however, a father and a human being. My interest in your article is not to downplay the rights of women; rather it's to enlighten you on the completely ignored rights of the child.

A woman who can't afford to raise a child has one of the greatest options in the world, adoption. Having adopted siblings, I understand the joy and happiness that adoption brings to the child and the adopting family. Why should we prematurely terminate a life that has no defense? When do we get the right to determine if someone else lives or dies? Doesn't that child have the right to live, to become whatever they are destined to become?

The problem with this argument is that's it's not a woman's rights issue. It's an unborn child's rights issues. Unborn children should, and will if this bill passes, have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. These are the foundations of our country; these are the basic constitutional rights. So let's "undo what we've done." Let's make this country a safe haven for those little human beings, who are utterly defenseless.
