Grapplers grab national ranking
Individual success is what the wrestling team has been known for this season, but in the latest rankings on wrestlingreport.com, the Bulls cracked the top 30 for the first time this season, coming in at No. 25.
The Bulls are led by senior Kyle Cerminara, who is ranked second nationally in the 197-pound weight class. Cerminara has a 30-match winning streak and is the only wrestler still undefeated in his weight class.
Junior Mark Budd and senior Harold Sherrell are also nationally ranked. Budd is No. 11 in the 133-pound weight class, and Sherrell comes in at No. 21 in the heavyweight class.
The newly ranked Bulls will be hosting a tri-meet on Saturday at Alumni Arena with a 9 a.m. start.
Second place despite solo success
Two was the number of the day on Saturday, as both the men's and women's indoor track teams placed second in the Cornell Upstate Challenge.
Junior George Fetchko, who won the weight toss with a season-best throw of 55-5.50 feet, led the men's team. Fetchko also placed second in the shot put, which was won by fellow Bull, senior Mike Giordano.
Other winners on the men's side were sophomore Rayshon Higgins in the triple jump and junior Roy Richards in the long jump.
On the women's side, sophomore Tina Villa won the shot put by improving on her personal-best throw by over a foot. Other winners included junior Kate Kohut in the 500-meter, freshman Mary Veith in the 800-meter and junior Jessica Lister in the pole vault.
Both teams will be back in action this weekend at the Penn State Invitational.
Adams splashes into success
The Mid-American Conference honored Luke Adams this week, naming the junior swimmer as its Men's Swimmer of the Week.
Adams, who swims the backstroke and distance freestyle, played an integral role in both of the Bulls' meets over the week, winning all four of his single events as well as the 400-yard freestyle relay against MAC rival Ohio.
Adams and the rest of the Bulls will be back in the water on Thursday at St. Bonaventure at 6 p.m.
Senior ballers rise to head of class
Members of Buffalo's basketball teams swept department honors for the fourth time this year as Calvin Cage and Brooke Meunier were named UB Athletes of the Week.
Cage, a senior guard, averaged 23 points over two games in the past week, netting his 1,000th career point in the process. Cage now sits at No. 12 on the all-time Bulls scoring list with 1,031 points.
Meunier averaged 19 points over two games this past week for the women's team. The senior guard from Saginaw, Mich., poured in a team-high 20 points as the Bulls defeated Akron on the road and also had a game-high six assists in the team's loss at Kent State.
