When guys get their hearts broken, they don't sit around crying and eating ice cream. They tend to let out their emotions in other ways, such as punching a wall or screaming, sometimes even writing a song.
Up-and-coming rockers Fivespeed are more than just a bunch of angry boys who feel the need to shout. They happen to be musically talented as well.
"Morning over Midnight," the Virgin Records debut released Tuesday reveals the major label's dark side, but also showcases their talent for signing a band that sticks out from all the other mediocre rock groups trying to make it big.
The Arizona-based band cuts through each song with striking vocals from front man Jared Woosley, solid bass tracks from bass player Matt Turner and crazy guitar riffs by Jesse Lacross and Brad Cole. Drummer Shane Addington adds intense rhythm.
The songs range from dark hardcore to straight-up emo ballads. This mix demonstrates the band's diverse talent and willingness to experiment with various styles of rock.
This Warped Tour regular has similarities to dark rock favorites Godsmack but with a more emotional flare. Their songs scream of self-struggle and relationships spiraling out of control.
"Blame It on You" is arguably the best song on the album. The music and vocals mixed together have almost a soothing feeling amidst the screaming anger throughout the album.
Song titles like "Misery Loves Company" pretty much set the tone for the entire album. Lyrics from the upcoming single "The Mess" talk about the scars of lost relationships and all the "mess left behind."
This album is not recommended for someone who is looking to brighten their mood. However, it's the perfect accompaniment to hard times with love or life in general.
Go ahead and indulge in a little angst-ridden rock. It might be good for you.
