Bulls fall early in the tourney

Three members of the women's tennis team traveled to the ITA East Regional tournament at the United States Military Academy over the weekend.

Andreea Novaceanu was UB's lone entrant into the field of 128 singles players. The sophomore opened her tournament play with a 6-4, 6-2 first-round victory. Unfortunately for Novaceanu, Lauren Cash of William and Mary defeated her 6-2, 6-1 after the UB representative battled hard in the first set to a 7-6 victory.

On the doubles side of the court, senior Kristen Ortman and sophomore Natalie Dean paired up to take on Colgate's duo of Alex Seaton and Lilen Vo. UB's twosome was bounced out of the tournament in the first round after losing in extra play 9-7.

The team will conclude its fall season this weekend at the Dartmouth Invitational beginning on Oct. 29.

Athletic department accolades

UB male and female athlete of the week honors went to Mike Rockman of the men's tennis team and Kahla Walkinshaw of the women's swimming and diving team this week.

Rockman was the lone singles representative in the ITA Regionals and nabbed the university's first win in the second round of the tournament. After defeating a representative from Stony Brook and a 25th-seeded Princeton opponent, Rockman fell to the sixth-seed, Mikhail Baker of Penn, 6-2, 6-2.

Walkinshaw swam her way to victory not once, but three times over the weekend and even set a pool record at Canisius. The junior from Hamilton, Ontario swam 500-freestyle at the Koessler Center in 5:11.65 on Friday, etching her name in Griffs record book. Walkinshaw continued her success at the UB natatorium on Saturday, cruising her way to victory in the 1,000-freestyle in 10:32.89 and the 100-backstroke in 1:03.10.

Rowers wanted

UB women's crew head coach Rudy Wieler is looking for recruits for the team. Wieler said in a recent interview with The Spectrum that he is sending a call out for girls looking to earn a scholarship as a part of the rowing team. Wieler is especially interested in recruiting athletic girls, 5-foot-10, approximately 150 pounds.
