First official tip-off
It's been over 200 days since a UB basketball team has suited up, but things will change this Friday as both the men's and women's teams get ready for Prime Time Basketball.
Formerly known as Midnight Mania, Prime Time Basketball brings the two teams out to compete on the court of Alumni Arena at 8 p.m. in various games, including Beat The Coach, a three-point shooting contest and a scrimmage.
Prime Time Basketball is part of a three-event series that is being dubbed "Must See UB." The other two events are the volleyball game versus Ohio at 6 p.m. on Friday and the football game against Bowling Green on Saturday at 1:30. Before the football game, both basketball teams will be on-hand for autographs from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the UB Stadium north gate.
Cerminara ranked in NCAA polls
After being ranked second in the 197-pound weight class for the Mid-American Conference, Kyle Cerminara has been ranked in the top ten in three national preseason polls. Amateur Wrestling News has Cerminara ranked at seventh, WIN magazine has him at eighth and wrestlingmall.com has him at ninth. Returning national champion Jake Rosholt of Oklahoma State is ranked first in all three polls.
Weekly Athletic Honors
This week's UB Athletes of the Week are representatives from the football team and the women's soccer team.
Senior defensive lineman Rob Schroeder takes the honor for the male athlete of the week. Schroeder and the rest of UB's defense fought hard in Saturday's loss to Akron. The Bulls set season bests by holding Akron to 225 yards of offense and adding 10 quarterback hurries, nine tackles for loss and three sacks. Schroeder's individual statistics included a sack assist, two hurries and four tackles, two of which were for a loss. So far this season, Schroeder has accumulated 1.5 sacks and 17 tackles with 4.5 for a loss.
Freshman forward Brooke McCalla steps into the light as female athlete of the week. McCalla was clutch in the soccer team's double overtime win over Northern Illinois, scoring the tying goal and helping set up the winning goal. McCalla's successful shot came in the 68th minute in the form of a penalty kick she was given after being fouled in the goal box. McCalla was fouled again, setting up Katie Fage's direct kick that became the game-winning goal two minutes into the second half.
