Students responsible for actions off campus

Letter to the Editor

Already this semester, the university has received numerous complaints and police reports about student house parties in University Heights involving underage drinking, excessive noise and other disruptive behaviors. This past weekend, at least ten different parties were visited by Buffalo police and UB students were issued verbal warnings on policies regarding underage drinking, sale of alcoholic beverages, noise ordinances, public urination, criminal mischief, property damage, DWI, littering and third-floor occupancies. These students were advised that future complaints/violations would result in citations and criminal charges. Additionally, addresses of offending houses were identified and will to be monitored by the Buffalo PD, the Buffalo Housing Authority and the State Liquor Authority.

As a result of these activities, over one dozen UB students may now face on-campus judicial charges. Remember that as a UB student, your behavior off-campus is still subject to the Student Conduct Code and University Standards and Administrative Regulations. You do not have to be charged or arrested by off-campus police in order to face campus charges. Disruptive, dangerous and illegal conduct off campus will be pursued on campus as violation of the Student Conduct Code.

If you are underage and involved in an alcohol violation, the university will contact parents regarding the incident.

In addition, your activities off campus shape your neighbors' image of all college students and the university in general. Even though your current home off campus may only be temporary, recognize that many of your neighbors are permanent residents who take pride in their neighborhood and who will remain in their homes long after you have graduated and moved on. The basic rules are simple: treat your neighborhood and your neighbors with genuine respect.

University Heights is a vibrant, diverse community. If you are a student living in the community, make sure you do your part to make the area a desirable place for everyone to live safely, peacefully and harmoniously.
