Nearly two months after performing at this year's Spring Fest, rapper Cassidy turned himself in to Philadelphia police on charges of murder, attempted murder, reckless endangerment, aggravated assault, conspiracy and weapons possession, according to MTV News.
The incident took place on April 15, just two weeks before Cassidy, whose real name is Barry Reese, came to UB and performed with Elephant Man and Snoop Dogg at Alumni Arena. According to reports, Cassidy and two other men exchanged fire with three men during an argument behind a house in the rapper's northwest Philadelphia neighborhood.
During the melee, 22-year-old Desmond Hawkins was shot in the back and killed. The other two men were treated at hospitals for gunshot wounds and released, according to authorities.
According to SA President Dela Yador, Cassidy seemed unfazed by any of these events before his Spring Fest performance.
"I talked to him before he performed, he just looked happy chilling," Yador said. "It's an unfortunate situation. It's a little crazy that a guy comes up here to perform and is then accused of murder. It's just one of those things you shake your head at and wonder why it happens to the same people."
Yador attributed the incident to the company Cassidy keeps.
"Sometimes the people around you can just bring you down," Yador said. "It's unfortunate because he's got a good album out. He's maturing as an artist, but you get something like this and it's like, what else can you do?"
