I agree that affirmative action has its limitations (Letters, April 25), but at the moment there are no other conceivable solutions to this problem. So instead of insulting the method and placing blame on one side such as the "lazy liberals," why don't you actively engage your mind and find solutions to this problem, because bickering and political hackery are not working.
I have taken physics classes and agree that there are a lot of minority TAs that may not be able to speak proper English, and agree that this in no way dulls their intelligence. However, you said the sole reason for large curves in physics are due to a specific few TAs, which is completely fictional. There are significant curves in these science classes because the exams and classes are tougher than, say, business or psychology classes.
Your reason for placing blame upon affirmative action is baseless because it has helped hundreds if not thousands of students here at UB to obtain degrees and expand their educational horizons. Additionally, a goal of affirmative action is to help out domestic students, whereas the physics department is made entirely of international students.
As stated from your letter, you are receiving this information of minority TAs from an outside source. How can your claim even be validated if you have never taken a science class and yet you are able to parallel the evils of affirmative action solely against your upbringing in a Caucasian background? Now isn't that hypocritical?
In conclusion, maybe the next time you write an opinionated piece, you should direct it with specific points instead of convoluted hypotheses, or wait - maybe you never learned to write properly, coming from your Caucasian background.
