Letter revealed student's bigotry

Letter to the Editor

It is quite apparent that despite Mr. Vigliotti's numerous "high school sporting or academic trophies" that he has no security whatsoever ("Campus taking sides on homosexuality," March 11). If that were true, he would not need to so vehemently lash out at the gay community the way he did. It's very easy to feel superior at the expense of others. But a man does not need to tear down others if he is secure in himself and his worth.

Judging LGBT people by a drag show is just as nonsensical as judging the entire African-American community by the contents of a hip-hop video. It is but one facet of the culture. The display was brought to this school because it is one of the more entertaining facets.

Ms. Parrino's comment in an earlier letter that "our campus is really awesome and liberal" was not meant to imply that the University at Buffalo has taken a side in any debate. It was meant to convey that a good many people on this campus are open-minded enough to allow individuals of different backgrounds the opportunity to express themselves and their culture.

Mr. Vigliotti seems to be under the impression that heterosexuals keep their sexuality behind closed doors. This assertion is completely false. All you need to do is walk around campus, go to the mall, or see a movie, to see the number of ways that such people flaunt their preference. Kissing in public, sex in movies and television, and walking hand in hand are all instances where heterosexuals are "out and proud."

Let's face it, Mr. Vigliotti is a bigot, and regardless of what the gay community does, they will never have his respect.

The gay community is not trying to shove anything down anyone's throat. If you believe that, then you must also believe that the Indian, Chinese, African-American and Latino communities are trying to do the same when they hold an event celebrating their own culture. If you are interested in attending, attend. If not, then don't go. No one is coercing you to come to the drag show. Maybe Mr. Vigliotti needs to keep his finger down his throat to purge himself of his ignorance and vitriol, and come to an understanding that all people are deserving of respect and civility.
