Mark's marks
Mark Sy of the men's swimming and diving team earned Mid-American Conference Athlete of the Week honors for his performance last week in the pool, in combination with his performance last semester in the classroom.
Sy, who won a pair of events in the Bulls' 154-83 loss to St. Bonaventure on Friday, compiled a 3.573 grade point average.
He won the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 9:48.37, beating his closest competition, St. Bonaventure's Scott Jordan, who placed an extremely close second in the long event with a time of 9:49.22.
In the 200-yard butterfly, Sy spent nearly the entire race in second place, behind the Bonnies' Ramon Margulis, but was able to edge out a victory with a time of 1:54.85, as Margulis finished just a split second behind, at 1:54.88.
A senior at UB, Sy is majoring in computer engineering, and has a 3.573 GPA. He is also the eighth Buffalo athlete to earn this honor, and the second in a row as Turner Battle from the men's basketball team won it last week. The Bulls are second only to Akron, who has had nine athletes earn MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honors.
