It's a good thing that people can pirate music. Listening to music before deciding whether to buy or not can prevent the purchase of serious garbage. A perfect example of this is the album "Weapons of Mass Destruction," the latest work from rapper/television star, Xzibit. The "Pimp My Ride" host's album hits stores in a dire need of a tune-up.
This is Xzibit's first album since the 2002 release of "Man vs. Machine." The problem with "Weapons" is that Xzibit does not reach the lyrical heights he did on his previous successful LP releases, "Restless" and "At the Speed of Life." However, he does have a couple of real hot songs on this album. This will not necessarily bring sales up at the record store, but they are great singles to play at a party.
Some of the West Coast native's best work comes in the songs "Muthaf---a," "Beware of Us" featuring Strong Arm Steady and "Tough Guy" featuring Busta Rhymes. Xzibit has his best lyrics in these songs, which complement the beats set forth by elite producer Timbaland.
The acclaimed beatmaster collaborates on various songs, but lyrically there is an element missing throughout the album. On the track "Beware of Us" Xzibit spits, "Everyday above ground is a good day/ My wordplay only contain what the hood say/ Clack the black off a n--ga make him see the light/ My overhand right will violate your civil rights."
Xzibit is found throughout his album taking aim at President Bush. He does so on the songs "State of the Union" and "Cold War." "State of the Union" is a collection of the President's speeches cut together to make him say incriminating, threatening things.
While this is a clever attempt, it's a tired topic. It has become a common trend in rap as well as everyday life. Xzibit definitely needs to come at his listener with better lyrics and creativity or before he knows it, nobody will even download his music.
