Athletes of the Week

Athletes from both the UB men's and women's cross country team swept the University at Buffalo Male and Female Athlete of the Week award, as announced by the UB athletic department on Monday.

The men are represented by Dan McKenna, a sophomore who finished 26th out of a field of 82 runners at the Mid-American Conference championships in Toledo. McKenna was UB's top finisher in the eight-kilometer race with a time of 26:17.20. McKenna's time was five seconds faster than his time in the same race in last year's conference championships. His time decrease is especially notable considering the wet and muddy conditions of the course. McKenna's finish helped the Bulls climb out of last year's tenth place finish and improve to seventh in this year's meet.

Senior Jenny Koeppel claimed her first MAC individual title and was the top finisher in the entire race on the women's side. She finished with a time of 17:51.70, which was seven seconds faster than second-place finisher Jill Scully from Ball State. In addition to the individual title, Koeppel earned first team All-MAC honors. Koeppel's time led the Bulls to a fourth place team finish, five places higher than the team's ninth place finish last year.

In the books

Following a five-save effort in UB's 2-1 victory over Cornell on Sunday, senior goalie Anna-Lesa Calvert of the UB women's soccer team recorded her 22nd career win and moved into second place on Buffalo's all-time wins list. The Dallas-native's five saves also brought her career total to 239 saves, good for fourth in the history of UB women's soccer.

Schrantz closing in on record

UB senior volleyball player Molly Schrantz is making a strong serge to close in on the highly celebrated 1,000 mark for both career kills and career digs. Schrantz currently has 952 career kills and 986 career digs following last weekend's matches at Ball State and Marshall. Schrantz would be only the fifth player in UB volleyball history to reach the 1,000 mark in both statistical categories.
