From car bashing to a Godzilla Glove Tournament to free doughnuts, this year's Spirit Week will try to build up excitement leading up to Saturday's home football game.
Spirit Week starts on Oct. 11 and will feature a variety of events each day designed to build school spirit.
Monday's events kick off with a window-painting contest and club fair.
For the window-painting contest, student clubs and organizations can paint the large windows in the lobby of the Student Union and show their spirit for UB Athletics as well as their own organizations.
Window painting will be accompanied by free pizza served in the Student Union Monday afternoon.
In anticipation of Saturday's game, students can help demolish a Miami Redhawk's car at this year's Car Cruncher, held on Thursday.
Tony Lechanski, a junior electrical engineer, said he thinks the demolition of the car will get students excited for the game.
"The events leading up to Homecoming are all centered on school spirit," he said. "Take for example the Car Cruncher, it's a symbol of how UB will crush their opponents, while the students get all worked up for the game."
The Gladiator Joust Tournament tests the participant's strength and agility. Organizations will send representatives from their clubs to battle it out in a gladiator-style joust.
Also on Thursday, there will be a Homecoming King and Queen Forum, with an open discussion between the final candidates for homecoming king and queen.
Students may enter the contest by filling out a preliminary application, which is available in the SA office. Applications must be returned by Oct. 12 at 5 p.m.
The homecoming king and queen will be named during Saturday's halftime show. There will be a $200 prize for the winners.
Contestants will battle each other in the Student Union on pedestals until only one is remaining.
Wednesday's events include the Wing Eating Contest and Rock Climbing Tournament.
With the popularity of chicken wings in the Buffalo area, this event proves to be one of the most popular with the students. In the Student Union Lobby, each participant will test their wing-eating ability.
SA organizers said Friday's carnival, held in the Student Union, is the most anticipated event. The carnival will include various games, free food and live entertainment.
"Most of the other events involve student organized clubs competing to win title of club with most spirit. The carnival is an overall event for everyone to attend," said Marc Rosenblitt, Student Association entertainment director.
According to Rosenblitt, there has never been attendance below 2,000 people at the carnival since it was held in the Student Union.
Melissa Chow, a senior chemical engineering student, said she is looking forward to Spirit Week.
"I think homecoming week is a great event at UB because it really shows UB's school spirit," she said. "It gives the student body a chance to come together to participate in events like the toga contest and date auction which are always really funny to watch."
