Athletes of the Week

UB's Male and Female Athletes of the Week this week both had career marks in their respective sports.

J.J. Gibson of the football team recorded a career best stat line in the Bulls' 48-14 loss at Marshall last Saturday. The senior led UB's defense with 14 tackles, an interception, and a fumble recovery. His nine solo tackles brought him to 46 on the season and over 200 for his career. Gibson is only the second Buffalo player ever to reach the 200-tackle mark in a career at UB.

The Bulls' Female Athlete of the Week is Anna-Lesa Calvert. She helped save the Bulls' two most important victories this year to give UB its best shot at a playoff berth. Calvert notched her fourth shutout of the season over the MAC regular season co-champion Ohio University in the Bulls' 2-0 victory on Sunday. She also picked up 13 saves, bringing her season total to over 100 saves for the first time in her career. Calvert ranks in the top ten in terms of UB career records; the senior is currently tied for second with 21 career wins, fourth with 234 career saves, and eighth with 116 saves in a season.

In addition to UB Female Athlete of the Week honors, Calvert earned the MAC Player of the Week award for her performance in the Bulls' last two regular season MAC victories. Her gutsy weekend performances gave the Bulls their best shot at a playoff appearance this year.

Contenders?

UB's women's soccer team is currently holding onto the eighth and final MAC playoff spot thanks to the two wins the Bulls recorded last weekend. To maintain playoff status, Buffalo needs Bowling Green and Toledo to tie in a contest that the two teams will play on Thursday. If the Bulls preserve eighth place in the MAC, they will face first-place Kent State on the road.
