Men's Rugby

Buffalo's Mad Turtles defeated Cornell by a score of 15-5 and took possession of first place in Division I of the New York State Rugby Conference.

Cornell applied a lot of pressure early in the match, and found itself as close as the five-meter line, but could not come away with any points, as Buffalo's back-line of defense was able to stop them.

The Turtles were able to counter Cornell's considerable size advantage by keeping the ball in motion and not letting them set up, thus forcing them to cover the width of the field, and not just the length. UB was able to score when Aaron Hludzenski received a pass from outside center Greg Campo and was able to scurry past the Cornell defense for his first shot of the day and a converted attempt. While Buffalo continued to apply pressure for the rest of the half, they were unable to score again and went into the half leading 5-0.

Woods named MAC Player of the Week

Ben Woods, a freshman kicker on the University at Buffalo football team earned Mid-American Conference East Division Special Teams Player of the Week honors on Monday following the Bulls' 48-20 win over the University of Central Florida on Saturday at UB stadium.

Woods is averaging 42.6 yards per punt this season. Saturday against UCF, Woods averaged 46.7 yards per punt and contributed to the Knights averaging just 18.6 yards per return.

He has also had four kicks downed inside the 20. Handling most of the kickoff duties this season for the Bulls, Woods has helped UB to hold teams to just over 20 yards per return.

Woods was the second player to earn MAC recognition this season for UB. He joins Buffalo defensive end Aaron Sanders, who earned Defensive honors after UB's season-opening loss to Eastern Michigan.
