Men's Tennis Dominates St. Francis

The men's tennis team gained its first team victory of the fall season, defeating visiting St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday at the University Tennis Club. The Bulls did not give up a point to the Red Flash, scoring a 7-0 victory in the non-conference match.

"It was a great weekend to get a 'W', work on some different things in matches and yet also be able to rest some of the nagging injuries that have been hindering us a little bit," said Senior Nick Zieziula.

Playing at number one singles, Zieziula defeated SFU's Tyler Jones 6-0, 6-2. Buffalo's number two and number three singles players Yules Hadisubroto and Mike Rockman also defeated their respective opponents in similar fashion, with each only dropping two games.

"It was great to get some confidence back," said Zieziula. "The schedule has been so tough so far, in terms of both travel time and competition level, that to have a light weekend at home does a lot for you."

Rounding out singles action for the Bulls, Josh Liderman defeated Ajay Nune 6-1, 6-1 at number four and Matt Kennedy and Albert Alant both swept their opponents with "double bagel" victories at number five and number six singles.

"They lacked any kind of depth to compete with us at any position," commented Zieziula.

In doubles competition, the number one doubles team of Mike Rockman and Josh Liederman handily defeated their opponents 8-0. Yules Hadisubroto and Albert Alant also did not drop a game to their SFU opponents at number two doubles, scoring a 8-0 victory over the Red Flash. Joe Popielarczyk and Mike Zappone were victorious for the Bulls with a 8-3 win at number three doubles.

UB was still without the services of senior Randy Rocchio. Rocchio, who primarily played number one singles and teamed with Zieziula at number one doubles injured his elbow early this season.

"Randy is still not cleared to hit and he is still working out with the team to be ready for when he is cleared, said Zieziula. "He had an MRI and they are waiting for it to be examined."

Last spring, Rocchio compiled a 13-18 record for the Bulls while primarily playing number one singles. The team of Rocchio and Zieziula also went 14-11 at number one doubles during the 2003-2004 season
