Kerry Supports Same-Sex Rights

Letter To The Editor:

This letter is in response to Tony Curley's letter ("Put Gay Marriage in Perspective," Oct. 22).

In his letter, Mr. Curley says that we should "Vote for a candidate that shares the same view" rather than attribute our own views to a candidate who may or may not agree. He also urges us to compare the importance of issue of marriage with those of foreign policy and the economy.

I agree completely. Therefore in spite of my differences with Senator Kerry on the subject of marriage, I will be voting for him for his strengths on foreign policy, the economy and education. Still, I don't think the issue of marriage is as trivial as Mr. Curley seems to imply, so it pleases me to note that although Sen. Kerry does not openly support my right to marry, neither does he support a constitutional amendment that seeks to deny me forever a right for which I so eagerly wait.

One might also note that although Sen. Kerry repeats the catch phrase "Marriage is between a man and a woman" like a mantra, he does say that he feels that same-sex couples should be entitled to those rights that are currently exclusive such as hospital visitation rights, inheritance or property and adoption. It seems that while President Bush wants to deny both rights and recognition to one tenth of the American population, all Sen. Kerry wants to deny us is the word "marriage."
