With a name like The Music, it might be hard to pinpoint just exactly where such a band's musical focus lies. For the British quartet, which opens tonight's Fall Fest for headlining Incubus, their music is multi-dimensional.
"The main reason we are so unique is we are four different people, with different tasks, playing four different instruments, with four different angles, and it makes for an interesting combination," said The Music lead guitarist Adam Nutter.
The Music, from the United Kingdom, promises to bring an eclectic lineup for Friday night's show.
"I wouldn't say we are one genre," said Nutter. "We cover many different categories."
He promises to bring a unique style of music, hoping to play a variety of material, some of the group's older tunes, and a few from their new album, "Welcome To The North."
The quartet has known one another since they were babies, when all of their parents were friends. Vocalist Rob Harvery, lead guitarist Nutter, bass guitarist Stuart Coleman, and drummer Phil Jordan formed their band when they were only 16 and 17 years old.
"We just kind of took it from there. We would just jam, and then one day someone heard us," said Nutter.
Their discovery was marked by a chance encounter with a record producer. The guys were signed on a dual record deal signifying a major leap in their career. The band was signed by Virgin Records in the United Kingdom and by Capitol Records in the United States. They have had four albums released in the United Kingdom under Virgin Records, and Capitol Records released "Welcome to the North" in America where it has been a huge hit.
"Robert writes the lyrics, so a lot of it is personal, mainly what's happened to us in the past 10 years, and some frustrations about issues," said Nutter on the inspiration to their music.
On the whole, The Music seems to just have things fall into place for them. Like any rock band, they are on the road, and being away from their homes can surely get tough, but it is all done for the love of music.
"Connecting with people is an amazing thing, through our music, and being on stage, or when a fan says to you, 'You've changed my life.' But mostly we make music for ourselves. That is still what gives it a kick."
The words of an artist still inspired always assure an engaging display.
Opening Fall Fest will be Seven Day Faith, an alternative rock band, followed by The Music. The night concludes with headliners Incubus. The Music will be touring with Incubus for the next few months or so, with shows lined up in the United Kingdom, England, as well as Canada.
Unlike last year's show at Baird Point, the weather holds no bearing. The bands will be tuning up in the friendly confines of Alumni Arena. Be sure to bring the ever-necessary pointer and pinky fingers.
