As an active member of the Democratic Party, and former Newstead Democratic Committee Treasurer, it pains me to read a statement given by the College Democrats President Justin Martin on Monday ("College Dems Hope to Build on Liberal Momentum," Oct. 4). The statement "Western New York is a predominantly Republican area" is unequivocally wrong. In fact, Erie County is predominantly Democrat. Recent numbers range from approximately 60-65 percent being registered Democrat.
A second error implies that there is only one House of Representatives seat for all of Erie County. The county actually has two seats in the House: the 26th and 27th Districts, which are elected by a portion of Erie County.
The article later states Martin as being involved in 26th District, which would imply he is working with Democratic candidate Brian Higgins. The mere idea that his organization claims to be helping the Higgins campaign for the House of Representatives is hardly palpable. If you believe that his district is predominantly Republican, you can't be helping too much.
The apparent misguided efforts that the College Democrats can offer should maybe be utilized elsewhere. Jack Davis in the 27th District doesn't have a shot in the dark of winning against Republican Tom Reynolds; not even the College Democrats could weaken his chances any more.
