Think sex, guitars, and more sex. "Alive and Amplified," the Mooney Suzuki's follow up to 2003's "Electric Sweat," makes more love than Wilt Chamberlain in his prime.
It's tempting to classify the Mooney Suzuki as just another classic rock throwback and toss them in the resale bin just as fast. From their 1970s theme cover with psychedelic colors and an African goddess to their AC/DC guitar work, the Mooney Suzuki fits the bill. Still, there's something about their swagger and sound that keeps them away from such a description.
Lead singer Sammy James Junior has a two-track mind, those two tracks being how hard his band "rocks" and intercourse with females, or just females in general. If song titles like "Shake That Bush Again," "Loose N' Juicy" and "Messin' In The Dressin' Room" don't convince, then his lyrics will.
"Say naked lady, naked lady I can see/ Naked lady I can see just who you was meant to be/ You're beautiful and free," he sings on "Naked Lady," then adding, "Shine on naked lady" for emphasis.
The Mooney Suzuki is not a new band, so it would be improper to dismiss them as a new-jack rip-off band, but they do bear a lot of resemblance to the Aussie quartet Jet. What separates the two is a different brand of swagger: Jet has a whisky-drunk confidence while the Mooney Suzuki has gaudy flash and Zima.
Just a fair warning: Not everyone likes Zima.
