Off-Campus Students Should Consider Safety

Letter To the Editor

As is the case every fall, many UB students move into new homes and apartments off campus, especially in the communities near our North and South Campuses. While it is always exciting to move into a new place and get together with old and new friends, there are some important things off-campus students need to consider in order to live safely and peacefully in their new communities.

First is safety-when living off campus you do not have the added benefit of others looking out for you 24/7. You must be responsible for your own personal and home safety. Here are a few tips:

  • Keep your doors and windows locked.
  • Leave lights on when you plan to return after dark.
  • Never use an attic or basement as a bedroom. It is illegal and puts your life at risk.
  • Make sure you have smoke detectors with fresh batteries.
  • Develop a fire escape plan.

Buffalo is "The City of Good Neighbors" and although your off-campus apartment may only be a temporary home for you, the neighborhoods need to remain safe, clean and livable. Respect your neighbors and make sure your guests do the same. If you have a house party, be sure to:

  • Inform your neighbors ahead of time.
  • Give them your phone number and ask that they call you before the police if they have a problem.
  • Do not allow the party to get so large that it gets out of control. It can quickly become unsafe.
  • Pick up your trash right away.

Stay safe. Play smart. Be respectful. Have a great semester on and off campus.
