"Simpson Expands Staff, Funding for Bioinformatics"

Crucial First Step Demonstrates Investment in City, Research

The first step is always the most difficult, but President John Simpson made his first executive move with a strong eye toward the future - expanding UB's bioinformatics center. The expansion will be in several fields, including new research priorities, a larger staff, separation of management and research and an economic focus in downtown Buffalo.

The bioinformatics program was a personal project of former Provost Elizabeth Capaldi. There were fears that without her steady hand, the program would wilt away. Thankfully, Simpson has grabbed the reins and provided the necessary leadership to not only continue the program, but also broaden its horizons and influence.

Simpson increased the staff of the institution from about six to almost 50, which will allow a larger focus on research. All hiring, especially involving high-end positions such as scientists, is always welcome. That staff will focus on new fields, including proteomics and pharmacokinetics - technology that was once thought of as only for the future.

Thankfully, the new bioinformatics center includes a management team, lead by a new executive director, Bruce Holm. Aside from dealing with financial and marketing matters, hopefully someone will also be in charge of public relations, in order to explain what proteomics and pharmocokinetics entail.

All of the new fields are necessary to make UB a premier institute for biomedical research in the 21st century. A top of the line research institution will not only affect the field, but will greatly increase funding for a wide array of projects. The research will be directed excellently, as Jeffrey Skolnik is a tremendous attribute to the field and this school.

The other important step taken by Simpson was sticking to his promise of promoting the interests of the community, especially in the city of Buffalo. The new bioinformatics center is currently under construction near downtown; a finished building and new staff will hopefully be a part of several new downtown developments, both related to the school and otherwise.

Simpson did not just stick his toe into the water - he created a big ripple that will benefit everyone for many years. There was no trepidation, and a possible problem was not only dealt with, but also dramatically improved. If all of his moves are on the plane of increasing Buffalo's national profile and reputation, and integration into the city and community, this school is looking at a successful future.
