I'm writing in regards to the letter to the editor "Hazing is Normal in College," in the April 9 issue of The Spectrum.
Feminists, hazing and chivalry all in the same letter - what was going on there? I was not aware that being demeaned by another person was required in character building.
Personally, I do not enjoy being yelled at or made fun of, especially by my friends. Maybe I've been missing out on something. Furthermore, I was not aware that character building meant conforming. Would I judge my boyfriend or classmate because he was not "man enough" to put up with abuse? I think not.
Despite the belief of the "chivalrous" fraternity brothers who fight for the rights of hazing, manhood is not determined by who has the most testosterone.
And what do feminists have to do with chivalry or hazing? As a strong feminist, all I'm fighting for is my rights as a human being. Curse all those feminists for wanting equal rights, equal pay and rights over their own bodies. Those concerns definitely must have been the killer of chivalry.
As a feminist, a fraternity hazing is not at the top of my concerns list, but I am much more interested in my reproductive freedom. Sure, I don't believe in hazing, but let's not drag feminists into this one.
