As a student here at UB, I have to say enough is enough.
Every week we see garbage in the personals section of Generations about Long Island girls, and I seriously think that it all needs to come to an end. I have kept my views in long enough, and feel after the Spectrum's article this past Wednesday, the issue has gone too far. I feel the Spectrum's article "Quota to Limit Female Admissions from Long Island," although meant to be viewed as a joke for their April Fool's issue, has crossed the line.
For all of you who are not aware, The Spectrum is funded partly by a subscription fee through the undergraduate Student Association. That means our money is used to print this garbage, and yes, that includes my money from Long Island. When the money I pay is used to make fun of and degrade any members of the student population, I take offense.
Yes, I am aware that the article was written in jest. However, if The Spectrum dared to poke fun of homosexuals, or republicans or any other group on campus, do any of you really think the article would have been written? So what gives the newspaper the right to print this article about Long Islanders?
For their actions, I feel the staff at The Spectrum has crossed the line and owes the entire university an apology for their unprofessional behavior, and a promise to never let it happen again.
