There was a solid class of candidates for treasurer, all of whom want to restore fiscal sense and spending restraint to the Student Association. Of the eligible candidates, The Spectrum feels the most qualified to lead and put a strong system in place is Lorenzo Guzman.
Guzman's years of experience with several student groups including Special Interest Service and Hobbies, Residence Hall Association, Faculty Student Association and the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Alliance give him the ability to balance budgets and run things efficiently. His government experience will also be extremely helpful for dealing with the levels of bureaucracy.
His status as an independent candidate will allow him to act as a check on the other members of the executive board's spending discretions. Guzman is not beholden to any one club or government organization that will dictate any spending needs. He wants to cut money in sensible ways and has definite plans for reigning in spending while still serving all the students.
Students can be confident with Guzman being the final signature on all the checks signed with their money. Guzman has several credible ideas for maintaining fiscal sense, and will be able to use his economics training as a positive.
One other candidate also expressed a vision for the future and an above average grasp of the necessary figures: Joseph Sebaaly. As with Guzman, Sebaaly is running as an independent. He presented strong plans for integrating clubs into the community more, and hopefully those ideas will be fostered elsewhere. Unfortunately, he does not have the broad base of experience necessary for running such a large organization.
As long as there is a strong commitment to club programs and a return to open government and fiscal responsibility, the Student Association is headed in the right direction. Lorenzo Guzman can best put the student body on that path.
