I am writing in response to the article "Dueling Realities" written by George Zornick in the March 10 issue of The Spectrum.
I remember the very touching scene of all of the members of Congress holding hands singing "God Bless America" after the attacks of Sept. 11. I thought it was a wonderful testament to this nation, showing that we can come together when unity is needed.
However, I remember betting on how long it would take for the liberals to start protesting the response and showing how cowardly they seem to be. I won the bet - it didn't take long.
I have been hearing about all of the economic costs of this War on Terror. Zornick quotes it as $2.5 billion a week.
What's the problem? Do people realize that we are extremely fat in this country? We don't need the money. Our "poor" are the upper middle class of most nations in the Middle East and elsewhere. It's about time that we help people and give the cash to people who really need it.
Zornick speaks of the "hypocrisy" of President George W. Bush. Well, how about the hypocrisy of his critics? Most of them are liberal, who always try and break up big business because they want to distribute the money to everyone they can. Now that we are distributing it on an international scale they all of a sudden rescind their position.
A second example is the liberals complaining about the death toll in the War on Terror. I can't believe I am hearing them complain about the death toll when they support the murdering of innocent babies all across the nation.
Zornick also talks of how we lost 650 people in our efforts against terror. He speaks of it as if it is some appalling number. Now, one death is too many, but one must put this in perspective.
The campaigns against Saddam and the Taliban were two of the most successful military operations in history. The vast majority of those deaths were not battle deaths. They were cowardly terrorist bombings. All things considered, those are well within acceptable tactical losses.
The freedom of two nations is the world's reward. Where else have two nations been freed militarily with triple digit casualties? It hasn't happened. We should be praising how this war has been handled. You can't win a war without losing people.
Don't think for a second that I am speaking without the fear of loss myself. My older brother and father are both in the Air Force, and I will enter right after college. My father was away in the Gulf War, and twice in the last two years. I miss him terribly when he is away and I am scared for him, but I know what the greater good is.
Most people don't have enough backbone to ever lace up a pair of combat boots, so they don't know the attitude of these troops. They are happy Saddam is gone. Many of them have told me that they were anxious to kick his butt before we caught him. Isn't this ironic? The people doing the fighting and risking their lives are the ones who support the war, and the people who sit here and do nothing are the ones saying too many people have died. Let's stop whining, the people in danger aren't.
The worst part is, if this were all done under a Democratic president they would all be okay with it. They are just going after the Bush because he is of the other major party. I just showed the moral hypocrisy of the liberals, so their complaints are obviously political and not moral.
