Bulls Drop Doubleheader to Hoyas

Buffalo Baseball Off to 0-2 Start

Buffalo Bulls baseball kicked off its 2004 campaign with a frustrating start in the nation's capital on Saturday in a doubleheader with the Georgetown Hoyas.

The Bulls dropped both games to the Hoyas at Shirley Povich Field on Saturday, with Georgetown taking the first game, 8-1, and the nightcap, 7-3.

Georgetown (4-5) scored three runs in the fourth inning and an additional five runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 8-0 lead in game one. The Bulls finally arrived in the seventh inning on a solo shot by first baseman James Kingsley.

Buffalo starter Nick Bellacose picked up the loss, giving up three runs on four hits over four innings. Hoyas starter Stephen Burns went the distance, hurling a complete-game five-hitter.

The Hoyas' momentum sparked them to a first inning 2-0 lead in the second game, tacking on another run in the fourth. Kingsley cut the lead to 3-1 with an RBI single, driving in Andrew Wengert who had a stellar day overall, hitting 3-for-6 including a double over the two games while crossing the plate three times.

Unfortunately, this would be as close as the Bulls would get, as the Hoyas answered with three runs in the home fifth inning to make the score 6-1.

Dan Quinn hit a two-run single in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to three, but it would be answered by a Hoya run in the bottom of the seventh, and GU held on for the victory.

Bulls' starter Chris McGraw was charged with the loss, giving up six runs (five earned) over 4.1 innings pitched. Georgetown's Eduardo Pena notched the win, allowing three runs over 5.2 innings, striking out seven.

The Bulls lost another doubleheader on Sunday against Georgetown, 10-0 and 10-2, the results of which will be printed in Wednesday's edition of the Spectrum.
