The UB Bulls baseball team finished its opening weekend on a sour note, dropping both ends of a Sunday doubleheader to the Georgetown Hoyas (6-5), giving up ten runs in each game before losing by the scores of 10-0 and 10-2.
The Hoyas scored all of their game one runs in the first three innings, and GU pitcher Warren Sizemore hurled a complete game shutout against the Bulls, striking out four and walking two en route to victory. UB starter Jeff Loveys got the loss, allowing five runs on four hits.
The lone bright spot for Buffalo was the stellar pitching of freshman reliever Joe Welch, who didn't allow a hit in his two innings of relief, striking out one.
Game two featured Bulls' first-time starter Sean McWilliams, who kept Buffalo in the game with his work on the mound, giving up only one run on five hits over six innings. Unfortunately, when he was pulled for reliever Adam Ruszkowski, the Hoyas exploded for eight runs.
Buffalo finally struck, making the score 10-2 in the top of the ninth inning thanks to a Joe Mihalics RBI triple and an RBI single by Andrew Wengert, knocking in Mihalics.
The loss dropped the Bulls to 0-4 on the season, with all four losses coming from the Hoyas over the weekend.
Buffalo will return to action on Friday at the University of Maryland for a three-game set.
