Two university faculty members and one student received death threats in the mail just before the Thanksgiving break, according to police.
The letters, in envelopes that contained bullets, were sent through the campus mail system on Nov. 24, University Police said.
Though police declined to discuss the specific content of the letters, they confirmed that they threatened harm unless the recipient paid a sum of money.
University officials contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which they say will assist in the investigation.
"As of right now, there's nothing new to report," said Richard C. Linde, assistant chief of the University Police. "We are still actively working on it, and we are still working with the FBI."
According to Dennis Black, vice president for Student Affairs, UB is not releasing the academic departments of the faculty members involved, for investigative reasons.
According to an article in The Buffalo News, the two professors are from foreign countries, but it is not known whether their nationalities had anything to do with the incidents.
Linde encouraged students who may have information about the threats to contact police.
"In the future, make sure to report any incidents," Linde said. "We are taking it very seriously."
