Split Decision

Women's Soccer Goes 1-1 on Road Trip as MAC Tournament Looms

When a team is given more opportunities to score than its opponent, it usually is able to cash in for victory.

That was not the case for the Buffalo Bulls women's soccer team however, as UB lost its final conference away game Sunday 1-0 to the Toledo Rockets at Scott Park in Ohio.

Devon Russell led the Bulls in shots with three, followed by Lauren West with two. All of these opportunities were for naught, however, as the Bulls were shut out.

Rocket goalkeeper Tracey Lehman made eight saves to earn the shutout. The Bulls out-shot the Rockets (7-9-0, 4-6-0 MAC) by a margin of 13-6, but were unable to capitalize on any of their attempts.

Toledo's lone goal was scored by Kelly Langenbeck eight minutes into the game, and that was all they would need due to the stellar play of Lehman in the net.

Buffalo's Anna-Lesa Calvert made two key saves later in the game, but gave up the early goal the Bulls couldn't get back.

UB will play its final home game of the season Friday at 6 p.m. against Kent State (11-2-3, 8-1-2 MAC).

The game is indubitably important for both teams.

"It's kind of a do or die for Kent State to win the division," said Tassy.

This is an important game for UB, as it will decide whether or not the Bulls will be traveling to another college for a first round MAC playoff game, or have the critical opportunity to host a tournament game in the first round.

"I think it is a must win for us, because it puts us in a different category in terms of who we're going to play and where we're going to travel," said Tassy.

Buffalo is sitting at fifth in the conference, with Central Michigan (5-4-1 MAC), Akron (5-5-0 MAC), Bowling Green (4-4-2 MAC) and Miami (4-6-1 MAC) very close behind.

The top four teams in the MAC earn the chance for first round home games.

Tassy avoided commenting on the playoffs, saying, "Any given day anyone can beat anyone in the MAC."

Kent State will wrap up UB's MAC and home schedule and they then travel to Cornell to finish off the regular season on Wednesday the 29th.

Bulls Top Falcons in Overtime

Sometimes you just happen to be in the best of positions.

That's where Erin McGarry found herself, in the right place at the right time, to score a game ending overtime goal just two minutes and 58 seconds into the period.

The goal was her first of the season, and it won the game for UB as they beat the Bowling Green Falcons by a score of 3-2 in overtime at Bowling Green Friday.

Shannon Ferreira booted a corner kick that flew into the crowd in front of the Falcons' net, and Bowling Greens' players could not react in time to get it out of the danger zone.

McGarry found herself in perfect position to take control of the ball and fire it into the net for the game winner.

"Whenever we play teams we think we can beat, there is a tendency of our team having so much information that we have a preconceived notion of teams that are better or worse, so it gets tough to motivate the team," said head coach Jean-A Tassy, in reference to The Bulls being favorites in the game.

Emily Russell led the way for the Bulls in the second half with her MAC leading 15th goal of the season in the 67th minute. That goal puts her two goals away from tying a UB record of 17 goals in a single season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Anna-Lesa Calvert made six saves en route to her eighth win of the year. That puts her in sixth in the UB record books for most wins in a season.
