In Friday's 2-1 loss to Western Michigan, the women's soccer team squandered a number of opportunities that may have cost them the win. Bulls head coach Jean-A Tassy said that if UB were going to be able to win against Northern Illinois, they would have to play much sharper than they did Friday.
"Even though we had our share of opportunities, we needed to finish consistently...also, the opening intensity needs to be there for us to win," said Tassy.
The Bulls (5-2-0 overall, 1-1-0 MAC) took Tassy's message to heart and completely dominated in a 4-0 thrashing of the Northern Illinois Huskies (1-4-0 overall, 0-1-0 MAC) on Sunday at RAC Field.
The Bulls got the only goal they would need in just the third minute when Nicole Olszewski received a beautiful feed from Natalia Crofut and scored her second goal of the season. Crofut, who is second on the team in goals scored and points, doubled the lead in the twenty-fourth minute on an unassisted goal. Four minutes later, Olszewski scored again on a feed from Erin McGarry.
Northern Illinois was abominable in the first half; they only had one shot on goal and appeared as if they weren't playing with team chemistry. This was highlighted by a mental blunder, as there was miscommunication between the Huskies and their coach, as they had only ten players on the field for roughly two minutes.
UB came out with their backups for the start of the second half, but they played no less brilliantly, continuing the stifling defense and ball-dominance, playing most of the second half in the offensive end. Jenny Dannecker tacked on to the lead with her first goal of the season in the seventy-ninth minute, assisted by Arielle Korczykowski.
Quietly having an effective game was Brenna McJury, who played an important role in stopping some early Huskie drives, and also made a few nifty moves, using her repertoire to beat defenders and set up teammates with good looks up in the offensive end as well.
For the game, UB outshot Northern Illinois by a 24-6 margin, and Bulls junior goalkeeper Anna-Lesa Calvert only needed one save for the clean slate, her third shutout of the season.
Buffalo returns to action on September 19 when the team travels to Central Michigan to face the Chippewas (1-2-2 overall, 0-1-1 in MAC).
