Among Buffalo's many venues for live music and theater, UB's Center for the Arts is not only a local gem, but a regional asset as well. Since opening its doors nine years ago, the CFA has expanded its slate of national and international performers with each growing season.
This fall will be no different. With a season chock full of variety and entertainment approaching, students and western New Yorkers alike should have no trouble finding something to keep them entertained on a brisk autumn evening.
Opening this year's season is a special theatrical event. The Tony Award-winning musical revue "Fosse," a celebration of the late director-choreographer Bob Fosse, will be in residency while rehearsing for their upcoming international tour. The show will be onstage Sept. 18 and 19.
The department of theater and dance will be presenting their own productions during the fall months. In October, J.M. Synge's "Playboy of the Western World" will be onstage in the Drama Theatre Oct. 15-19, and Stephen Sondheim's comedy "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" will be presented in the Black Box Theatre Nov. 6-9 and 13-16.
In celebration of its 30th anniversary this year, the Zodiaque Dance Company will present a special production, featuring choreography by returning alumni. The student dance group will be on stage at the Drama Theatre Nov. 13-16 and 20-23. A special gala reception will be offered on Nov. 15 with awards and special guests featured.
In addition to the many student productions, an exciting slate of national comedians and musicians will also grace the many stages of the CFA. Seen by many as the satirical and always-angry smart mouth of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," Lewis Black will appear on the Mainstage on Wed., Oct. 29.
On Fri., Nov. 14, critically acclaimed comedienne and actress Margaret Cho will present her latest one-woman show, "Revolution." Known for her candid commentary on sexual revolution and racial intolerance, Cho's brand of comedy is undeniably all her own.
On the music scene, modern jazz guitarist Pat Metheny will perform solo and with his signature Pat Metheny Trio on Sat., Nov. 8. Metheny's legendary guitar performances are intimate yet powerful, serene yet explosive, and altogether entertaining.
Another great night of music can be had as Gov't Mule takes the Mainstage by storm on Wed., Oct. 15. Featuring two members from The Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule will feature special guests Chris Robinson, former lead singer of The Black Crowes, and his new band New Earth Mud.
Tickets are now on sale for all fall performances, and can be purchased at the CFA Box Office or by contacting Ticketmaster. Discounted student prices are in effect for most events.
