NCAA Bracket Buster
Four MAC men's basketball teams were chosen to participate in the inaugural made-for-TV event that is "Bracket Buster Saturday."
The event will take place on Feb. 22 and will feature nine match-ups with 18 teams looking to make some waves and garner some attention from the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee.
MAC teams Kent State (16-2), Bowling Green (10-8), Marshall (9-9) and Ball State (8-11) will all be participating in the event. Kent State will battle Hawaii (11-5) at 9:30 p.m. (ESPN2), Bowling Green will lock horns with Illinois-Chicago (14-5) at 5 p.m. (ESPN2), Marshall pairs up with Illinois State (3-15) at 2 p.m. (ESPN Plus), and Ball State will duke it out with Western Kentucky (12-8) at 4 p.m. (ESPN Plus).
The University at Buffalo women's swimming and diving team split a Mid-American Conference double-dual meet Saturday afternoon in Toledo, Ohio. The Bulls defeated Marshall, 186-94, but fell to the host Rockets by a 173-121 margin. UB is now 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the MAC.
Freshman Ashlee Burton took first place by a quarter of one point in one-meter diving, and placed fourth on three-meter. Sophomore Tracy Hoover took third place on the three-meter board. Heather Rochetter took first in the 400 independent medley with a time of 4:43:43. The Bulls also placed first in the 800 free relay in a time of 8:02:10 with Jen Brankovsky, Trina Sinclair, Jolie Pun and Melissa Schafer.
The University at Buffalo men's swimming and diving team dropped a 134-97 decision to Mid-American Conference rival Toledo Friday night. With the loss, UB slips to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the MAC.
Freshman diver Pat Lee swept the one- and three-meter diving events. Junior Mark Taravella finished second to Lee in both events. Mark Sy won the 200 fly (1:56:27) and 400 independent medley (4:09:05), and Aviv Oren won the 200 breaststroke (2:13:40).
The University at Buffalo women's indoor track and field team set five new school records at the Penn State National Open Saturday. Jenelle Callender broke the 60-meter dash record and the 400-meters record. Laura Olsen established a new record in the pole vault, Faith Thompson had a UB all-time best in the 20-pound weight throw, and Biaunca McFarland set a new record in the triple jump.
Jerimie Slick was the top men's performer, taking second place in the 3000-meters.
There was no team scoring at the event.
